The Big Shrewsbury Editing Trip - Part 6

Day 5 - Thursday 9th April - A big writing session

Having had such a successful shopping day yesterday, today was

to be a writing day. I wanted to keep my step count low again, so I skipped my morning walk and watched BBC news again, while writing a ton of postcards to send to friends and family members. I feel like there’s nothing quite like receiving nice post, so I’ve sent out 20 postcards!! Hopefully the recipients will enjoy them.

I grabbed a quick Greggs breakfast and took my cup of tea to the library, hoping to get there at opening time and secure a desk overlooking the castle. Shrewsbury Library is incredibly popular. Every time I’ve been in there, there has scarcely been a table there. It’s brilliant to see a community embracing their library so wholeheartedly.

I was delighted to find a seat free facing across to the library and I set to work straight away, editing the rest of Chapter 1 of ‘Charlotte - The Lady in White’. I feel really proud to have reached this milestone with the book, and I feel as though the edit, if I can sustain it as is, is going to be transformative for the story.

Having completed Chapter 1’s edit, I decided to stop for lunch. I bought a couple of bits I’d taken a shine to in the arts and craft shop in the library, including a guide to walks around Shrewsbury (I managed to pick up a second one in another shop later on, which was great!) I’ll be looking forward to doing some of these extended walks on my next visit. I also picked up a leaflet for £2, which is a guide to ‘Shrewsbury’s Mysterious Loggerheads’. Essentially it’s a quest to find all the different examples of the town crest in a variety of locations around the town. I think it might be an interesting thing for me to do tomorrow, to add some interest to my walking.

I wandered around town for a bit, looking for somewhere to eat, but I’d been so engrossed with my writing that it was already rather late to get anything much. I popped into the Market Hall and had a look round but again, nothing was grabbing me. When I left the building, it was tipping down with rain, so I felt there was nothing for it but to run across the road to Wimpy. I went basic - chicken tenders, chips, corn on the cob, but it did the job and by the time I’d finished, the rain had stopped.

I wandered about town picking up a few extra bits and pieces, including five more postcards, as I hadn’t bought quite enough.

There were some musicians busking, playing some trad, which was a real flavour of home and they brought a smile to my face.

Pretty soon, I went back to the library and grabbed another spot in the corner - downstairs this time - and wrote out the remaining postcards, before beginning the process of typing up the edits to ‘Charlotte - The Lady in White’ on the laptop.

Just before 5pm, I was told the library was closing, so I packed up and headed out, spotting some googly eyes on a signpost, which made me giggle a little.

I grabbed a salad from Tesco and headed back to my lodgings, where I rested up, watched the first episode of the new series of Taskmaster, and went off to sleep.
